UAB School of Dentistry students, faculty, staff and even spouses rolled up their sleeves Oct. 10 and baked their best cakes for the annual cake competition sponsored by the UAB chapter of the Alabama Association of Women Dentists. The competition raises money for breast cancer research and programs at the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center and UAB Minority Health and Health Disparities Research Center.
"This is the biggest turnout yet," says Susanna Pischek, a fourth-year dental student and publicity chair for the event. "It's double what we had last year. A lot of students, faculty and staff have been touched by breast cancer and this is a way we can give back."
The contest is simple. An individual or team can enter as many cakes as they like for an entry fee per cake. Judges are recruited from across campus and from the community. This year there were representatives from the dental school, the Comprehensive Cancer Center, MHRC, Birmingham-based magazines, and bakeries. Cakes were divided into three categories — chocolate, vanilla/fruity and specialty. They were judged on taste, presentation and creativity.
"It's amazing seeing all of the different cakes, especially from the guys," Pischek says. "We have some talented bakers. It's hard to judge sometimes what people are like outside of school and now with this event you can see how many creative and talented people we have in the School of Dentistry."
- Best Chocolate: Peanut Butter Cup Brownie Cake - Katie Seale (wife of dental student Andrew Seale)
- Best Specialty: Peanut Butter Passion Cake - Thi Tran, Rachel Tucker, Christine Bode
- Best Vanilla/Fruity: Yummy Carrot Cake - Megan Guthman
- Best Presentation: Trifle - Angie Gullard
- Best Faculty: Sour Cream Chocolate Cake - Linda and Larry Ally
- Best Overall: Peanut Butter Passion Cake - Thi Tran, Rachel Tucker, Christine Bode
My take on the best part of the contest? After the cakes were judged, you could buy a slice for a dollar. And with the empty plates I saw, that added up to a lot of dollars — $803 to be exact. Pischek says the total raised with entry fees and sales was $1,398.95.
